Our Programs

St. Gabriel Mercy Center offers a variety of services that support families, promote stability, and strengthen our community. Our programs include a Thrift Store, Food Pantry, Emergency Assistance for rent and utilities, Pharmacy Assistance, Senior Outreach services, Parents as Teachers home-visitation support, and our Learning in the Lab digital literacy program. Together, these programs provide essential resources and opportunities that empower individuals and families across the Mississippi Delta.

Emergency Assistance Program

Our Emergency Assistance Program provides short-term financial support to individuals and families facing temporary hardship. Assistance is limited to rent and utility payments and is designed to help prevent eviction, avoid utility disconnection, and promote housing stability within our community.

Each client receives a professional assessment conducted by a social worker to determine their immediate needs and the most appropriate level of support. During one-on-one sessions, clients also receive guidance on money management, employment readiness, and steps toward long-term financial stability.

To ensure comprehensive care, we actively collaborate with local agencies and community partners to connect clients with additional services and resources beyond what we provide.

Senior Outreach Program

Our Senior Outreach Program is a free, activity-based day program for adults ages 55 and older. Designed to reduce isolation and encourage social connection, seniors gather daily for activities such as Bingo, dominoes, devotion, Wii bowling, arts and crafts, guest speakers, field trips, and monthly celebrations.

Participants enjoy fellowship and continued learning in a supportive environment. Our staff ensures seniors receive daily exercise, a healthy meal, and routine wellness checks, including weekly blood pressure monitoring and monthly weight tracking. The program proudly serves seniors from Mound Bayou, Merigold, Renova, Winstonville, and Shelby.

Thrift Store

St. Gabriel Thrift Store is a community thrift store offering adult and children’s clothing, shoes, accessories, furniture, artwork, games, household items, and more at very affordable prices. Many items are gently used or in excellent condition, with some still carrying original store tags. All merchandise is donated by generous supporters and community members, and the Closet is operated entirely by volunteers.

In addition to providing low-cost essentials, clients may meet with a case manager for assistance, including money management guidance, job awareness support, and referrals to partnering agencies for additional resources.

St. Gabriel Thrift Store gratefully accepts donations of new or gently used clothing, furniture, appliances, electronics, and household items. Items not sold are shared with local shelters and church ministries with similar missions. All donations are tax-deductible.

Sales and special promotions are offered throughout the year, including “25-Cent Sales” and “$5 Bag Sales,” making it easy for families to shop affordably while supporting our mission

.

We extend heartfelt appreciation to our donors, volunteers, and the entire community for helping make it possible.

Learning in the Lab Program

The Learning in the Lab Program provides youth, adults, and seniors with access to essential digital and life-skills education in our fully equipped computer lab. This program offers training in digital literacy, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and career development, along with a variety of additional resources that support personal growth and long-term success.

Through hands-on instruction, guided sessions, and practical learning opportunities, participants gain the skills needed to navigate technology confidently, manage finances wisely, explore business ideas, and prepare for employment.

The program is designed to empower individuals of all ages with the tools and knowledge necessary to thrive in today’s digital and economic landscape.

Parent As Teachers Program

The Parents as Teachers (PAT) Program is an internationally recognized, evidence-based initiative staffed by Certified Parent Educators. The program follows a structured curriculum designed to support families during the most critical early years of a child’s development.

Parent Educators conduct monthly home visits and host monthly group support meetings, providing individualized guidance and practical tools for parents. Through these sessions, families gain a deeper understanding of their child’s physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development. The program equips parents with the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to foster healthy growth and school readiness.

Food Pantry Program

Our Food Pantry provides nutritious groceries to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. Through community donations and partnerships, we offer a selection of essential items such as canned goods, fresh foods (when available), and household staples. The program is designed to help relieve immediate hunger needs while supporting overall household stability.

Our goal is to ensure that every family has access to the food and basic resources they need during difficult times, offered with dignity, compassion, and respect.
